While some of our other series cover topics that are definitely “hot,” this series has much to do with social justice and community well-being.

For its first two-and-a-half years, Free River Press was devoted to creating a small body of writings by Nashville homeless and issued six chapbooks by homeless writers. In 2004, FRP conducted a workshop for Arabs and Jews in New York and New Jersey and published their writings in Violence in the Holy Land: Witnessing the Conflict in the Middle East (2004).

More recently FRP has conducted interviews on the Pine Ridge Reservation with the Oglala Lakota.

The stories are read by farmers, residents of rural towns and villages, commercial fishermen, towboat captains, organic farming pioneers, CSA operators, and rural youth.

This is both a record of vanishing folkways and a look at the emergent people-centered agriculture that is helping reinvigorate communities. Interviews with the writers occasionally supplement their readings. The writings were developed in workshops that were conducted in Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Iowa from 1991 to 2009 and issued by Free River Press in Heartland Portrait: Stories from the Rural Midwest.

Episodes from this category include: Farm Crisis I & II, Icons & Emblems, Simple Times, Commercial Fishing on the Mississippi, Mississippi River Hazards, Stories from Clermont, and Rural & Village Youth.

Why You Should Run “American Mosaic.”

Robert Wolf and Free River Press have consistently garnered praise from critics across the country.

“Bob Wolf’s approach to oral history is unique . . . His work is more than a lament, it is a battle cry.”
— Studs Terkel

“Not unlike the fictional character in the Broadway musical, The Music Man, Bob Wolf has also traveled from town to town, encouraging people to express themselves, writing their chapter of the American story.” —Jerry Bowen, “CBS Sunday Morning.”

“Robert Wolf has gathered a chorus of unique and powerful voices in these pages…This book is filled with stories about people and places most of us barely know and about ways of life that seem to be vanishing before our eyes. This is a book of tremendous energy and passion. In these pages, you can hear America sing.” — Rick Kogan, Chicago Tribune

“Heartland Portrait is more than a narrative; in many ways it is the conscience that we need to remember, cherish and perhaps restore, that makes us a human community.”— Dave Warren, Former Deputy Director, National Museum of the American Indian, Smithsonian Institution

“American Mosaic” features stories and voices from the Midwest, Southwest, Mississippi Delta, New York, and Chicago. The voices of farmers, towboat captains, commercial fishermen, ranchers, jazz musicians. Corporate public relations specialists, suburban housewives, actors, social workers. Men and women from villages and cities. In short, a cross-section of America. Most of the recordings in “American Mosaic” feature the original authors, but some are also read by actors, like noted stage & film veteran Robert Swan.

The linocuts on these pages are the work of Chicago singer/songwriter/aritst Bonnie Koloc. Samples of Bonnie’s CDs can be heard at www.bonniekoloc.com.

The theme music for “American Mosaic with Robert Wolf” was written and performed by Chuck Suchy (www.chucksuchy.com) North Dakota’s state troubador. Click HERE to listen to Robert Wolf interview Chuck Suchy on an episode of “American Mosaic.”
